IL VIAGGIO A REIMS
Ossia L’albergo del Giglio d’Oro - G.Rossini
BRIEF SUMMARY:
Il viaggio a Reims (The Journey to Reims), composed by Gioachino Rossini, is a comic opera centered on a group of European aristocrats gathered at the Golden Lily Hotel in Plombières, France. They are on their way to Reims to attend the coronation of King Charles X.
The opera does not follow a traditional linear plot. Instead, it presents a series of interactions, misunderstandings, and emotional moments among the guests, each representing a different European nationality. Among them are the the charming Poetesse Corinna, the elegant Countess of Folleville, the melancholic Lord Sidney, the passionate Russian Count Libenskoff, and the lively Polish Marchioness Melibea.
Excitement fills the hotel as preparations are made for the journey. However, complications arise when it is discovered that there are no horses available to transport the group to Reims. This unexpected obstacle prevents them from continuing their trip.
Despite initial disappointment, the guests decide to remain at the hotel and celebrate the coronation in their own way. They organize a festive banquet, filled with music, dancing, and expressions of unity among nations. Each character contributes a piece representing their homeland, creating a symbolic celebration of European diversity and harmony.
The opera concludes not with departure, but with joyful acceptance. The journey to Reims becomes unnecessary—the true “journey” is the coming together of people from different cultures. Rossini’s work thus highlights themes of unity, celebration, and the spirit of international cooperation, all presented with humor, virtuosity, and brilliance.
Concert performance of the opera by Gioacchino Rossini - JOURNEY TO REIMS, or "The Hotel with the Golden Lily" with a youth festival orchestra, which includes creative teams and musicians from various national, regional and municipal orchestras, soloists-scholarships from the national scholarship program of the Cultural Perspectives Foundation and international guest soloists.
About the opera:
Rossini's last opera in Italian (all his later works are in French). It was commissioned to celebrate the coronation of the French King Charles X in Reims in May 1825 and is recognized as one of Rossini's finest compositions.
It is a challenging work, requiring 14 bright and virtuoso soloists (three sopranos, one contralto, two tenors, four baritones and four basses). In addition to their solo parts, they also perform common virtuoso ensembles. At its premiere, the opera was performed by the greatest voices of its time. It is invariably performed every year at the Rossini Academy in Pesaro.
Because this work was written for a specific occasion and has a specific plot related to this commission, which in turn makes a connection with the European aristocracy, officers - and a poetess - on their way to join the French coronation celebrations, for which she herself opera was composed, Rossini never intended it to have a long life beyond a few performances in Paris. Later, however, he used and modified about half of the music in "Count Aury", but each of its concert, stage or semi-stage interpretation finds relevant parallels with the ideals and problems of contemporary society. The approach of reuse and modification that Rossini uses inspires us and we find it highly relevant to this year's main theme of the festival - PLAYGROUND.
The dramatic content of this work is easy to understand and relate to modernity; the music and dramaturgy are spectacular, virtuosic and emotionally affecting, therefore a prerequisite for a great potential for impact on a young audience.
