Beginning as a one-off collaboration in 2017, the musical partnership between French electronic music composer and DJ Chloé and Bulgarian percussionist and composer Vasilena is being renewed both live and in the studio.

An unprecedented and forward-looking encounter brings together machines and percussion, electronics and acoustics.

Initially, the collaboration was intended to be ephemeral—a performance of Steve Reich's iconic composition Music for 18 Musicians, filmed live by Sourdoreille Collective for their music series Variations.

Immediately after that performance, the duo was invited to develop their collaboration as part of a residency at Xavier Veilhan's Contemporary Art Studio Venice during the French pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, where they were assisted by Nigel Godrich (a producer who has worked with Radiohead, Beck, U2, and Air). Over the course of six days, they recorded their works, developing their one-hour live show.

"The idea was to build the pieces around organized and unorganized structures," explains Chloe. "I constantly record live sounds from Vasilena and process them live with loops, effects... Then we play a constantly coming and going improvisational game that allows for the construction of repetitive, trance music."

In 2018 Radio France and Adami produced the Unik Sessions series for Record Store Day, in which Chloe and Vasilena recorded a live album without any changes, featuring two tracks – the rhythmic song "Balani" and the more atmospheric "Two Beautiful Eyes."

Vasilena talks about this with the expertise of an accomplished classical musician: "Chloe loves the element of 'mistake' in the creative process, which is very typical of jazz musicians and improvisers. Initially, we also made such mistakes, which we then turned into real musical ideas... We learned to be flexible and open to any suggestion from either of us." Chloe confirms this impression and the ability of this collaboration to break down the barriers between academic and club genres: "This collaboration changed me in terms of performance. In our live shows, I paint my musical pictures from Vasilena's suggestions. I have to constantly listen to her and reinterpret her. In this sense, electronic music is not just a genre, it is a tool that allows you to open up to other universes."

After more than two years of touring throughout Europe, including appearances at the most prestigious festivals (Musiq3, Days Off, Verbier Festival, Festival de Musique de Menton), their music has become increasingly refined. Chloe and Vasilena rediscovered their own repertoire and perfected their style, building their acoustic/electronic identity.

To build on all the exciting creative paths that have opened up in recent years, their album SEQUENZA was released by Lumière Noire Records in the fall of 2021.
