Concert by Sokratis Sinopoulos and Jaan Keerim in Petrich
Through their long-standing collaboration in the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet, Sokratis and Jaaan have created common codes of musical communication based on their shared aesthetic of rethinking musical traditions. Their duo is characterized by both a rare and innovative combination of musical instruments, lyre and piano, and a creative combination of different musical cultures. The medieval musical traditions of the Mediterranean and Europe, Byzantine music, classical, jazz, and contemporary music intertwine and assimilate in the diversity of the compositions of Sokratis Sinopoulos and Jaan Keerim, as well as in the interactive improvisations of the two musicians, which form the special acoustics characteristic of this duo.
In the project "Béla Bartók: Romanian Folk Dances – Revisited," the two musicians present a new interpretation of the Hungarian composer's work "Romanian Folk Dances." They deconstruct and recompose the musical material, highlighting the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns that comprise it and developing them through improvisation, creating connections with the musical traditions of the Balkans and Eastern Europe, as well as with contemporary music. Through this process, Sokratis Sinopoulos and Jaan Keerim have created a complete concert-length work that also includes musical themes composed by the two musicians, echoing Béla Bartók's Romanian dances.
Sokratis Sinopoulos - lyre
Greek musician Sokratis Sinopoulos is a contemporary master of the lyre, a bowed string instrument dating back to the Byzantine era. His playing is delicate and nuanced, yet highly expressive, and his mastery of the instrument is widely recognized. Sinopoulos collaborates with many musicians around the world. He feels equally at home crossing genre boundaries in jazz and classical music, as well as remaining faithful to the folk traditions of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2010, he formed the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet with pianist Yann Keerim, bassist Dimitris Tsekouras, and drummer Dimitris Emmanouil. The quartet's two albums, Eight Winds and Metamodal, were produced by Manfred Eicher for ECM Records and received excellent reviews worldwide. Sokratis Sinopoulos is a professor in the Department of Musicology and Arts at the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, Greece.
Jaan Keerim - piano
Jaan is one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation, with significant collaborations with musicians in Greece and abroad. His piano performances are distinguished by their sensitivity and combine local musical styles with classical and jazz piano, resulting in an exceptionally original sound.
