„TANGO, NO TODO ES ROCK“ – FILM, EXHIBITION & CHAT WITH PEDRO LOMBARDY

image

Presenting an exclusive selection of the photographs of PEDRO LOMBARDI, taken during the research and filming of the documentary "Tango, no todo es Rock", co-written with photographer Jacques Goldstein and directed by the latter (52 minutes, produced by Vidéo de Poche) in an exclusive meeting with him.

Filming and photographing in Buenos Aires, the "recognized capital ", and in Montevideo, "the other side", Pedro Lombardi embarks on a quest for tango, which is experienced as a true popular culture, far from chic clichés. A tango captured by his lens in everyday life, made up of nightly "milongas" in amazing places, public spaces, markets and sidewalks, captivated by tango players young and old, but always passionate and focused. The discrepancy between this concentration, this total immersion of the dancers in the movement of their bodies to the rhythm of the music, and the incredibility of the places and settings, gives Pedro Lombardi's photographs the power of an immediate truth.

Some of the dancers featured in the book of photographs Invitation au Tango (Pedro Lombardi, Ed. du Collectionneur, Paris 2005), such as Mariano "Uncle" Frumboli, Esteban Cortez and Evelyn Rivera, have since become not only world-famous references but also fascinating and compelling characters in the film.

The “cultural” and the “social” shape his approach

Pedro Lombardi photographs music, dance and theater, and works on self-esteem workshops.

“I've been interested in theater, dance and portraiture, and I've photographed sensual women... Basically, my work has always revolved around people and encounters. What interests me is the exchange with dancers, actors and women. I try to capture living expression, to blend into the crowd to capture attitudes, whether it's a dance hall, a theater rehearsal, or an event report.”
