For his first exhibition in Sofia, Axel MOREL presents several works related to the theme of water, and in particular the ocean. Shells of fantastical animals, with fragments of coral stuck to them. "REMAINS," scattered like trophies from a display case of rare objects. Fossilized octopuses, resembling goldsmith ornaments, crawl out of the frame and expose themselves, unfolding their gilded tentacles as if in a nightmare. Through his works, the artist reminds us of the vulnerability of the inhabitants of the ocean depths and refers us to the transience of our own lives.

Axel Morel strives to take embroidery beyond two-dimensional forms, developing his works in the manner of sculptures—something like three-dimensional embroidery!

He constantly multiplies and diversifies his techniques and combinations of materials—silk, glass, metal threads—to get as close as possible to the subject, often resorting to clusters that act as aesthetic motifs. His approach hints at the "transience" of existence through symbols such as ostentation, vanity, fossilized imaginary sea creatures, or remains of coral reefs.
